India Gate
India Gate, standing majestically in the heart of New Delhi, is one of the nation’s most significant landmarks and a symbol of pride. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the 42-meter-high stone arch was built in 1931 to honor the 84,000 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The structure resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris but carries a distinct Indian identity. At its base burns the Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of the Immortal Soldier), a tribute to soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1971 war. India Gate is located on Rajpath (now known as Kartavya Path), near Connaught Place in central New Delhi. It is easily accessible via India Gate Metro Station (Central Secretariat station is also nearby) and is surrounded by government buildings and gardens. The monument is best visited in the evening when it is beautifully lit, and the lawns around it come alive with families and visitors. Entry is free, making it one of the most popular attractions in Delhi.
